Free OneDrive storage to drop to 5 GB starting July

Microsoft has started sending out emails to let users know that it’s cutting down the amount of free OneDrive storage from 15 GB to 5 GB, with the change to come into effect on July 13.

The decision to reduce the free storage offered to users on OneDrive was announced in late 2015, but following public backlash, the company decided to make a change and cut the storage only for users who don’t claim their free space.

Users had until late January to do so, which means that everyone who didn’t manually claimed their 15 GB of free OneDrive storage will get downgraded to 5 GB.

Migrate all your data before mid-July

In emails that are now being sent to these users, Microsoft explains whether any actions are necessary, depending on how much space is being used in OneDrive.

“There is no action you need to take, because your OneDrive is currently below the new storage limits,” the email sent to someone who has less than 5 GB of data in OneDrive reads. As WinSuperSite notes, these emails appear to be tailored to each user based on the amount of used storage in their accounts.
“Even though you aren’t currently affected, we want to keep you updated on all important changes to OneDrive. If you’d like to check your account, you can visit the Storage space,” the email reads.

Those who exceed the 5 GB limit are provided with a list of options to make sure that the cut won’t affect their files. The email reveals that the downgrades will occur on July 13, so all actions need to be taken by this date.

New users creating accounts on OneDrive will only receive 5 GB while everyone else who claimed their storage will continue benefitting from 15 GB as was the case before the cut.

Unpatched WordPress plugins are to blame, yet again

A surge in attacks using the PHP-based C99 webshell has forced IBM's Managed Security Services (MSS) team to issue an alert regarding this dangerous threat.

According to security researchers keeping an eye on malicious traffic, during the last two months, traffic that resembles the one seen from the C99 webshell has spiked, with 404 different incidents in February and another 588 in March.

Webshells are files uploaded to a Web server to which attackers make requests or use a special GUI to pass on dangerous commands to the underlying server. They can be coded in various languages, from PHP to ASP.NET, and from JavaScript to Ruby, and despite their separate technical term of webshell, they're nothing more than backdoors, giving attackers control over servers.

If you find pagat.txt on your server, you're probably compromised

IBM says that attackers are leveraging vulnerabilities in unpatched WordPress plugins to infect websites with the C99 webshell.
In its initial infection stage, the actual webshell's code is uploaded to servers in the form of a text file called pagat.txt. In this file, IBM has found obfuscated PHP source code.

To make things even more confusing and infections harder to detect, the attackers don't place this text in the server's root or the vulnerable plugin's folder, but in a theme's directory. IBM says that, in most cases, the pagat.txt file was found at "http://www.website-name.com/wp-content/t.../pagat.txt".

The actual C99 infection takes place when the attacker finds a way to pass the content of this text file to the server's PHP interpreter. If the malicious code found inside pagat.txt executes, it will do two things.

C99 webshell comes with a Web-based GUI

The first is to send an email to the attacker, letting them know the location of their most recent infection. This email is delivered to a Gmail address and contains the website's domain name and the webshell's URL.

The second action taken by the deobfuscated pagat.txt code is to create a new file on the server. This is the actual C99 webshell, which can be accessed by the attacker through their browser at the URL included in the email they have just received.

Pictured below, this webshell allows attackers to run terminal code on the underlying server and also upload new files to the victim's website, possibly more intrusive webshells, DDoS bots, Bitcoin miners, or other server malware.

IBM says that, on April 12, 2016, before going public with their findings, a simple Google search yielded over 32,000 websites where the pagat.txt file was present.

Apple’s QuickTime was popular years ago, particularly for anyone wanting to watch movie trailers on the web, but its time has long since passed. There’s really very little need to have it installed on your system these days.

Because you no longer need it isn’t the only reason to uninstall it though. Trend Micro’s Zero Day Initiative has released two advisories (ZDI-16-241 and ZDI-16-242) which detail new, critical vulnerabilities affecting QuickTime for Windows, and these won’t be patched as Apple has reportedly deprecated the software.
The found vulnerabilities both allow attackers to remotely execute code after users have visited a malicious page or opened malicious files.
Apple hasn’t confirmed the vulnerabilities, nor (at this time) confirmed that it has deprecated QuickTime for Windows, in fact the software was just updated a few months ago in January. However, the latest version of QuickTime for Windows is aimed at users of Windows 7 and Vista, so it’s obviously outdated.
Following Trend Micro’s Zero Day revelations, the Department of Homeland Security's United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) has advised users to take action and uninstall QuickTime for Windows.

Researchers at security company ESET have released details of a new piece of malware that spreads disguised as video posts on Facebook.
Malicious links appear as a video post you were tagged in on a timeline, or as a message sent to you via Facebook Messenger by a friend. They use the titles, 'My first video', 'My video', 'Private video' or a string of randomly generated characters.

Clicking on the link tells you that a plugin is needed in order to play the video. If this is installed your Facebook wall will be flooded with fake video posts tagging various friends. The malware has other functions though, it can add friends, create Facebook pages, share, edit or hide posts or unfollow them -- though ESET says these features are not yet active.
At the moment the malware only targets Chrome users but there's no guarantee it won't spread to other browsers in future. The company has detected the threat more than 10,000 times in the past week and users around the world have been infected.
Writing on the ESET blog, malware analyst Lukas Stefanko says, "At this very moment, the malicious campaign is spreading spam messages and infecting Facebook accounts with a very high rate of success. However, it has potential to become more dangerous in the future, spreading other, more powerful malware with new capabilities".
