Free Wi-Fi hotspots are a major security threat for businesses |

Free Wi-Fi hotspots are the biggest security threat for mobile workers, according to new reports.
The recently released iPass Mobile Security Report says that 62 per cent of organizations are banning their mobile workers from using free Wi-Fi hotspots, with another 20 percent planning on doing the same in the future.
For 94 percent of surveyed companies, free and open Wi-Fi hotspots are a "significant mobile security threat".
"Wi-Fi is a disruptive technology that has changed the way people work, but in recent times it has also introduced formidable mobile security concerns", said Keith Waldorf, VP Engineering at iPass. "Being connected is the basic requirement of every mobile worker. However, with increasing numbers of businesses falling afoul to security breaches, the number of organizations expressing a concern about mobile security is high. The use of free and insecure Wi-Fi hotspots in particular is a growing concern, as organizations balance the need for low-cost and convenient connectivity against the potential threat posed by hackers".
Out of the 500 companies from the US, UK, Germany and France that participated in the survey, 37 percent said free Wi-Fi hotspots were the biggest security threat, followed by employee lack of security attention (36 percent), and the devices in use (27 percent).
The report also says keeping mobile workers in check is becoming increasingly difficult because they use multiple devices, and employ various ways of getting online.
Even though many companies use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) to encrypt connections, only 26 percent are confident their users use VPN all of the time.
"The fact is, mobile workers will seek out free Wi-Fi connectivity for its convenience, despite its security flaws", continued Waldorf. "Simply banning access to free Wi-Fi hotspots is a heavy-handed approach and is not the solution. In today’s 'Wi-Fi-first' world, it is imperative that organizations educate their mobile workers about the dangers of insecure free Wi-Fi, and equip them with the requisite tools to access a secure internet connection and remain productive".

With security and privacy in mind, will more browsers follow Opera's lead and offer f |

The modern internet user is somewhat paradoxical -- looking to be more connected and contactable than ever before, whilst simultaneously seeking privacy. Can the two ideas live side by side? It's a tricky balancing act, but many people turn to VPN tools to increase their security and privacy online.
Opera is the first web browser to bundle a free VPN tool as standard (with unlimited VPN data, no less), and it's hard to imagine that the competition won’t follow suit. Nothing has yet been announced, but the appearance of versions of Chrome or Firefox with integrated VPN would hardly be a surprise -- or would it? And how would you feel about a VPN tool supplied by Google?
Opera can offer a VPN tool without a second thought because it has a very different model to Google. Google makes its money by harvesting as much data as possible about its users and then using this to deliver targeted ads. Introducing a VPN feature to Chrome would seem counterintuitive, but if Mozilla follows Opera's lead, Google may be left with no choice.
The arrival of in-browser VPN to Opera is important at a time when people are more concerned about their security and privacy than ever before. But being concerned and knowing what to do are two entirely separate ideas. Not everyone who is aware of mass surveillance or other forms of privacy invasion is aware of what a VPN is, let alone how to use it.
That said, Edward Snowden's revelations, and the merciless drive of the UK government to gather more and more information about internet usage has made people aware that something needs to be done. Providing people with the tools they need is the first step towards allowing them to take control of their own privacy and security -- at least to some extent.
It's not just about privacy and security, of course, The internet was supposed to break down barriers, but in recent years it seems as though it is creating new ones. Geo-locked websites and services are seen by some as unfair and undemocratic, but there are more serious issues such as the Great Firewall of China preventing access to important information. Getting more VPN options out there is just one way to get around these problems.
Mozilla would be foolish to not follow suit and copy Opera. The same goes for Google, but it really has something of a vested interest in discouraging people from using such tools. Google has some soul-searching to do in the light of the most recent Opera release and it needs to ask itself whose needs are more important -- its own, or its users?

Taking the pulse of cyber security in healthcare |

Healthcare
Large hospitals often have thousands of workstations used by multiple employees to access confidential patient data, so securing them can be a major challenge.
Endpoint security specialist Duo Security has compared its customers in healthcare with those in other industries to determine how the sector differs in its security requirements.
Among the findings are that healthcare customers are logging into twice as many applications as the average user, widening the attack vector. Twice as many healthcare endpoints have Flash installed and three times as many healthcare customers have Java installed on their devices, again, putting them at greater risk of vulnerabilities and exploitation.
Healthcare customers are also more likely to choose Internet Explorer 11 as their preferred browser, compared to the latest version of Chrome favored by other users. Around 22 percent of healthcare customers browse dangerously on unsupported versions of IE.
Windows is by far the most popular OS in healthcare organizations at 82 percent. Ten percent of healthcare customers are on Windows 10, while another three percent run the now unsupported Windows XP.
"Keeping endpoints up-to-date with the latest versions of operating systems, browsers, plugins and more is no simple task for healthcare IT admins. Furthermore, they may use applications with dependencies on software versions commonly targeted by malicious hackers," says Mike Hanley, Director of Duo Labs. "It only takes one outdated device for a hacker to exploit a known vulnerability, install malware, steal passwords and/or gain access to an entire healthcare system and databases of patient data".
In order to keep their endpoints safe, Duo recommends that healthcare organizations keep their OS, browsers, Flash, Java and other software up to date, and apply patches as soon as they're available from vendors. They need to enable good security controls, like strong, unique passwords; two-factor authentication; and access security policies to detect, warn, notify and block outdated devices. They should also enable and require a minimum standard of security features on users’ devices, including encryption, screen locks, passcodes, Touch ID and more. It's also important that they encrypt patient data while in transit, and in storage, and never transmit it over public networks.
You can find out more about effective endpoint protection for all industries on the Duo Security site.

According to Google’s online transparency report, Google.com had been considered a "partially dangerous" website.
In the report under the Safe Browsing section, the company listed its own website as one that could be dangerous to its visitors followed by a list of site safety details along with testing details.
According to these details, Google.com displays some pages that redirect visitors to dangerous websites that install malware on their computers: 7b726aeb-a-62cb3a1a-s-sites.googlegroups.com,polnu4ewtan4iwki.ws, and 40d0dfd9-a-62cb3a1a-s-sites.googlegroups.com. Other dangerous websites that can be reached through the site have sent visitors to: maeaflordapele.com,valeimaginar.blogspot.com, and bou7out.blogspot.com.
Under the security and privacy tab on the the transparency report’s site, users are able to enter any URL and check its current status. As of now, Google.com is listed as "Not dangerous" and the testing details show that its status was last updated on 20 April.
At the bottom of the page, the company tells its users not to panic since "users sometimes post bad content on websites that are normally safe. Safe Browsing will update the safety status once the webmaster has cleaned up the bad content".
Google’s Safe Browsing helps protect hundreds of millions of Chrome users from unsafe websites and it is interesting that the company’s tool is able to point out its own security flaws. The site could be potentially useful for users who want to double check a site’s security before entering it into their browser’s address bar.

Merchants are not security savvy |

More than a third (38.5 percent) of merchants don’t even know what type of risks new technologies such as mCommerce bring. They most likely wouldn’t recognize a fraud threat even if they were right in the middle of it.
Those are the conclusions written in the new 2016 Mobile Payments & Fraud Survey, released by Kount. The figures are quite a surprise, knowing that mobile fraud increased by 81 percent between 2011 and 2015.
"Despite awareness that the mobile channel poses a greater risk than standard eCommerce, businesses are taking a blanketed approach to their security strategies", said Don Bush, vice president of marketing at Kount. "Security is an essential part of the consumer experience. And, as we saw with the rampant spread of data breaches, if organizations don’t have a tailored strategy to manage fraud as it evolves, they, and their customers, will be paying for it for years to come".
Instead of focusing on security, companies both small and large focus mostly on customer convenience, risking a lot. In the press release following the announcement, it says that "they’re relying on traditional eCommerce protection tools to manage risk in the mobile channel, even when nearly half (41 percent) acknowledge that mCommerce is riskier".
The report also unveils interesting figures regarding mobile wallets. Card associations and issuers are most likely to support them, in 85 percent and 75 percent of cases, respectively. Many made it possible for their cards to be used across various wallets, but only a third of merchants supports them.

It cost HOW MUCH to crack the San Bernardino iPhone?! |

There are a lot of questions still to be answered about the San Bernardino iPhone that saw the FBI and Apple go head to head. After something of a battle, the FBI found someone to crack the iPhone. But who exactly did it? How did they do it? Will Apple be told how to do it in private? But one question that has also been lurking in the background is just how much it cost to hack into a single iPhone.
Now we know the answer. Not precisely, but we have a pretty good idea. Perhaps unsurprisingly, cracking the iPhone at the center of one of the most interesting technology cases in recent history, was not cheap. In a somewhat roundabout way, FBI Director James Comey revealed that the cost was more than $1.34 million.
Comey hasn't produced the bill, but revealed that the FBI shelled out more than he will make before his directorship comes to an end. With an annual salary of $183,300, and nearly seven and a half years remaining, this works out at $1.34 million -- and that's without factoring in a raise. Even he concedes that it is 'a lot'.
Speaking in London at the Aspen Security Forum, he was asked how much the iPhone had cost to crack:
More than I will make in the remainder of this job, which is seven years and four months for sure. But it was, in my view, worth it.
With a price tag like that, let's hope the FBI doesn’t make a habit of forcing its way into iPhones, or the bills are really going to start to mount up. That said, Comey says that the software the $1.34 million plus bought can also be used on other iPhone 5cs running iOS 9.

Infographic: Protect Your Laptop from Damage & Disaster |

Quote:Infographic: Protect Your Laptop from Damage & Disaster
Like many other electronic items, your laptop did not come cheap and was probably only purchased after plentiful consideration over which was the best to buy. In other words, it’s a quite valuable and important item to have in your possession, but for some, it’s not so valuable and important as to take all reasonable actions to prevent it from being destroyed. There are so many ways in which a laptop can easily be damaged (possibly beyond repair) through sheer neglect, naivety or carelessness.
Bracken Foam Fabricators (www.foamfabricators.ie), an Irish company which manufactures foam products for computers, amongst other items, created this infographic highlighting how your laptop can be damaged and what to do to fix it if the worst happens. Dropping it on the ground and spilling liquids on it are two of the most common causes of damage, but even instances such as pets stepping on it, trying to shove a cable into the incorrect socket, or leaving it near extremes of heat or cold can cause lasting damage. Another all too familiar tale of woe is slapping the monitor on top of the keyboard without realizing that there’s earphones on the keyboard which could well have shattered your monitor when you shut it so forcefully.
Even the most careful of us are not immune from laptop disasters, so it is a good idea to get it insured. This infographic compares the insurance policies of eight leading laptop manufacturers to give you an idea of what to expect should the situation require. When considering a laptop insurance policy, find out what items come as standard and what you will need to purchase additionally. Also, make sure that you know exactly how much it will cost altogether (there can be shipping costs) and for how long the warranty is valid.
Be mindful the next time you’re tempted to carry your laptop by one hand, enjoy a cup of coffee while using it or shove/drag cables into or out of it venomously. All of these, and more, can ultimately ruin your laptop, either temporarily or forever.
