Apple Pulls the Latest iTunes Version from the Microsoft Store Due to Crash
iTunes version 12.12.0.6 coming with a fatal bug
Sep 23, 2021 08:19 GMT  ·  By Bogdan Popa  ·

The Microsoft Store version of iTunes has recently been updated to version 12.12.0.6, but as many users ended up finding out on their own, this new release comes with a major bug that makes it impossible to run the app.

Every time the app is launched after the update, it fails with an error reading “iTunes cannot run because some of its required files are missing. Please reinstall iTunes.”

Reinstalling iTunes from the Microsoft Store obviously doesn’t make any difference.

While it’s not clear what’s causing the bug, worth emphasizing is the whole thing only impacts the Microsoft Store version of the app and not the dedicated Win32 installer also available from Apple’s site.

“Same issue here, found many other non-apple forums with same problem and other than the usual repair/remove and reinstall no one has a solution that has worked. I am going to restore my win10 system and see if that works… here’s hoping,” someone says on Apple’s forums.
The workarounds

The good news is that Apple has already removed the faulty update from the Microsoft Store, but on the other hand, nobody knows for sure when exactly a new version is supposed to be published for users.

On the other hand, the easiest workaround is to just download the Win32 installer of iTunes and therefore download the app manually. This version doesn’t seem to be impacted by the bug, and of course, it continues to be available for download, so you can use it normally without any crashes.

At this point, no official statement has been offered by Apple, though some users who reached out to support staff say that in most cases, they ended up recommending the Win32 version as an alternative until a full fix gets the go-ahead for the Microsoft Store release.
