Quote:Research evaluates the performance of Android security apps

Many believe that security apps are a must-have on Android given how easy malware makes its way to apps, some of which are even available in the Google Play Store, but choosing the best tool isn’t necessarily an easy job.

And that’s because several companies have invested in Android security products that are supposed to protect their devices, so right now, there are tens of such applications listed for download in the Play store.

The security experts at AV-TEST come to the rescue, as they recently conducted new research to determine which antivirus is the best choice for Android home users.

As they do every time, they evaluated each security product in three key areas, namely protection, performance, and usability. Each test came with a total of six points, so in the end, the maximum score than an antivirus solution could get was 18 points.

Top apps
Needless to say, there are several security products that managed to get the 18-point score, including the antivirus engines from the following developers:

AhnLab
Antiy
Avira
Bitdefender
G Data
NortonLifeLock
securiON
Trend Micro
In other words, if you’re looking for a powerful Android security product, just choose one launched by these vendors, as they should offer the best mix of protection, performance, and usability.

Google’s Play Protect was rewarded with only six points for performance and zero points for protection and usability. In other words, if you’re hoping Google Play Protect would make sure you’re fully protected, this test shows that it’s far from offering the feature package you need to block all malware.

As a side note, if you’re trying to stay secure on Android, just avoid to download apps from sources you don’t trust. Softpedia has a large collection of Android APK installers, and all files are individually scanned before they are listed for download, which means you can download any app without any risk of malware.
