Invite to win thousands could really be a Google Calendar phishing scam
#1
Quote:It looks like your Google Calendar is the latest target for hackers. They're using legit looking invites to get you to click on malicious e-mails. Security experts warn the scammers can then gain access to a lot of your personal info.

The sneaky scam could be inviting you to win a thousand bucks or a free trip.

Too good to be true? it sure is.

“Just be careful with what kind of links you're clicking on,” advises Jay Rosenberg from Kapersky.

Rosenberg is part of the global research and analysis team at Kaspersky Lab who uncovered this latest phishing scam.

Hackers send out phony invitations through the calendar that link back to websites, enticing users to enter their credit card or banking information – and ultimately wiping victims of their money.

“It would be a link with maybe a page that's asking for some personal information,” said Rosenberg. “Maybe your g-mail account or maybe you send us your credit card information.”

So how do they do it? Editor-in-chief for lifewire.com, Lance Ulanoff, says these hackers know how to trick consumers.

“It's about our need to know more information,” said Ulanoff. “Or our desire to get money. Our desire even to help someone.”

We reached out to Google and even though they haven't said whether or not the hackers have been stopped, they released a statement saying in part, "We remain deeply committed to protecting all of our users from spam: We scan content on photos for spam and provide users the ability to report spam in calendar, forms, google drive, and google photos, as well as block spammers from contacting them on hangouts.”

So how do you protect yourself, but still use your Google Calendar?

Kaspersky recommends turning off the "automatically add invitations" option in Google Calendar's Settings and deselecting the "show declined events" box in the nearby View Options menu.
