Microsoft Reveals New Classic Microsoft Paint Features for Windows 10

After previously planning to deprecate the classic Microsoft Paint app in Windows 10 and move it to the Microsoft Store, here’s the Redmond-based software giant Microsoft not only giving up on this idea, but actually rolling out new features for the app.

The upcoming Windows 10 May 2019 Update, which is scheduled to go live for production devices later this month, will include new MSPaint accessibility features, including support to use the app and draw with the keyboard.

For example, users will be able to use the arrow keys on the keyboard to move the onscreen cursor and the space bar to activate the selected tool. Holding the CTRL key and using the arrows allows them to scroll the canvas.

When a selection is made, users can cycle through a total of nine control points with the Tab key, while pressing Tab + Shift allows them to cycle in counter clockwise order. The arrow keys can once again be used to modify the control point.

More keyboard shortcuts coming to MSPaint are available in the screenshots included in the photo gallery below.

Updates coming in Windows 10 version 1903

Additionally, Windows 10 May 2019 Update also brings better support for screen readers in MSPaint.

“Along with full keyboard input support, we’ve made improvements to the way Paint interacts with Screen Readers, like Windows Narrator, which some users might find improves their overall experience with the app,” Microsoft says.

All these improvements are living proof that Microsoft not only that no longer plans to give up on MSPaint, but also that the app is here to stay in Windows 10.

The May 2019 Update has already reached the RTM stage, and it is projected to roll out for users later this month. The final build can be downloaded right now in the Release Preview ring of the Windows Insider program.
