Microsoft wants Windows 10 to be at the core of the robot push
Microsoft announced at the ROSCon 2018 conference in Spain that it’s bringing the so-called Robot Operating system, also known as ROS1, to Windows 10.

This technology, which comes down to libraries and tools for building complex robots, will be further enhanced with Microsoft solutions like hardware-accelerated Windows Machine Learning, Azure Cognitive Services, Azure IoT cloud services, and several others.

Microsoft says it has joined the ROS Industrial Consortium to invest in industrial robots, and is working with Open Robotics and the ROS Industrial Consortium to bring the Robot Operating System to Windows.

“Windows has been a trusted partner of robotic and industrial systems for decades. With ROS for Windows, developers will be able to use the familiar Visual Studio toolset along with rich AI and cloud features,” the company said in an announcement.

At the conference in Spain, Microsoft is also showcasing its very own robot called ROBOTIS Turtlebot 3, which is powered by a special version of its Robot Operating System called Melodic Morenia.

First demos already available
The software has been specifically developed to recognize and steer toward the person that’s the closest to the robot. Windows 10 IoT Enterprise is the platform bringing the robot to life, and Microsoft says it relies on an Intel Coffee Lake NUC.

“Industries seeing benefits from robots are as diverse as manufacturing, transportation, healthcare and real estate. As robots have advanced, so have the development tools. We see robotics with artificial intelligence as universally accessible technology to augment human abilities,” Microsoft explains.

The software giant uses the conference in Madrid to present a Robot Operating System simulation environment running on its own Azure platform, showing how Azure IoT Hub can be used to easily control a group of robots.

The company has already published the necessary information for devs to begin working with the Robot Operating System, and more details are available on this page.
