Alexa may soon come to Windows 10 S devices as a UWP app

By João Carrasqueira @indospot · Aug 31, 2018 15:32 EDT       Amazon's Alexa has slowly been rooting itself into Microsoft's ecosystem, and especially Windows 10. After announcing that select Windows 10 PCs would start shipping with Amazon's digital assistant, the two companies went as far as enabling Cortana and Alexa to talk to each other seamlessly, expanding the reach of both.

But Amazon could be working to get even more friendly with Windows 10 users, per a new report from Windows United. According to the website, a Trekstor spokesperson said that Amazon is working on a UWP app for its digital assistant, which would essentially mean that customers using Windows 10 in S Mode would be able to use the digital assistant more easily.

The statement was made while showing off the current Alexa app at IFA 2018, which is only available outside the Microsoft Store and thus can't be installed by users in S Mode. A UWP app would give these users access to Amazon's digital assistant without switching out of S Mode or using Cortana.

Trekstor says the UWP version of Alexa should be available before the year is out, but as with any piece of unofficial information, this should be taken with a grain of salt until Amazon itself makes an announcement. If the information turns out to be accurate, it could also mean that Microsoft's strategy is working to some degree, as more apps and services have to be brought over to the Microsoft Store for those who use Windows 10 in S Mode.
