Interesting topic. BTW, your link for the discussion appears to be broken. This is the right one.

It seems Kaspersky has criticized the guy who once worked at Mozilla, and also took at a dig at Microsoft for Windows Defender. Well it's not the first time they did that, Eugene voiced his criticism in a post just a few months ago, perhaps a bit too aggressively. Also Windows Defender isn't as good without EMET's features I believe, which BTW is to be retired next year.

And if you don't have a strong antivirus to protect against ransomware, you are going to need a special tool to decrypt the files after an attack, as each ransomware uses its own algorithm, or lose your files. Often, these tools are not released, until it is too late.

There is absolutely no way I would dare to use Defender as my main AV anytime, there are way too many ransomware nowadays disguised as legit ads or software.
