Windows Defender app overhauled with several new features

Microsoft continues working on the new Windows Defender app for Windows 10, and the latest Insider build released to the Fast ring comes with some pretty major improvements.

First and foremost, it’s important to know that this app is different from the desktop-based Windows Defender version and is supposed to come in line with the other universal apps that Microsoft is offering right now. It features a similar design and since it’s still in its early days, functionality is a bit limited.

But with Windows 10 build 15002, Windows Defender becomes a more powerful security solution, as it gets new options to run quick, advanced, and full scans, just like a fully-featured antivirus product. Users can choose the scan mode straight from the main screen, and it goes without saying that full scans are the most recommended when trying to discover any potential threat on your system.

Additionally, the antivirus app comes with a new device performance and health screen that allows you to perform a quick scan and determine the current health of your PC. This particular feature comes in handy when trying to determine issues with Windows updates, storage capacity, device drivers, and battery life, but at the same time, it also lets you perform a Windows refresh to fix them all.

Settings and family options
The family options screen comes with visual improvements and links to content and applications on the web to set up or view device information, while the Firewall & network protection menu includes options that you previously found in Control Panel (these options do not work just yet, but should become available in upcoming updates).

There’s also a new settings screen in Windows Defender that allows users to toggle on or off real-time protection, cloud-based protection, and automatic sample submissions - these settings are also included in the Settings app, but having them in Windows Defender makes a little bit more sense.

And of course, you can also configure exclusions and notifications, which are both available in the Settings app as well.

Windows Defender seems to be working okay at this point, although there are a few options that don’t seem to be available just yet, but given the fact that it’s work in progress, expect more improvements to be released in future Windows 10 builds.
