Synaptics Unveils Advanced Biometric Fusion Engine for Smartphones
Combines fingerprint authentication and facial recognition

Great news for smartphone makers that are looking for complete authentication solutions to include in their products, as Synaptics has just announced its new multi-factor biometrics fusion engine aimed at mobile devices.

Synaptics could also be the company to provide the fingerprint sensor for the Galaxy S8, which is expected to ditch the traditional physical Home button in favor of the modern touch-sensitive controls.

The new solution announced by Synaptics is fully integrated into the company's “Natural ID” fingerprint sensors, which will allow for two types of authentication using fingerprint and facial recognition.

Synaptics’ Natural ID fingerprint sensors are already significantly more secure and convenient than typed passwords, and by adding multi-factor biometrics users achieve a whole new level of exceptional device- and application-level authentication,” said Anthony Gioeli, vice president of marketing, Biometrics Product Division, Synaptics.

Obviously, this leads to an overall increase of the system security as both fingerprint and facial factors must meet minimum requirements before authentication. Moreover, Synaptics claims the fusion engine announced today is expected to improve usability as lower individual verification thresholds still result in greater security.

The new biometric fusion engine is the result of the collaboration between Syanptics and KeyLemon, one of the leaders in camera-based facial recognition and authentication.

Integrating our advanced technologies enables an unsurpassed mixture of security and user convenience for trusted authentication in mobile payments, banking and other content sensitive transactions,” said Gilles Florey, CEO, KeyLemon.

In addition, Synaptics' new solution includes SentryPoint technology, which should allow handset makers to provide their customers with a wide range of secure authentication features such as Quantum Matcher with PurePrint anti-spoof technology.

The PurePrint technology can examine fingerprint images using innovative AI technology to determine whether or not a fingerprint is fake. Facial recognition also uses this anti-spoofing tools, along with the ability to check for combinations of eye blinking and head movements.
