Concept imagines overhauled version of Windows Defender
Nov 3, 2016 10:38 GMT  ·  By Bogdan Popa  ·

Microsoft is working to overhaul Windows Defender in the upcoming Windows 10 Creators Update due in early 2017, and the company has already provided us a with a screenshot to get an early glimpse into the way the antivirus is going to look like.

A concept posted on reddit by user /u/FocalSauce imagines a different type of makeover for the Windows 10 antivirus, giving up on controversial elements like the hamburger menu and adopting an approach that’s specifically focused on the amount of information provided to users.

As you can see in the renders included in the photo gallery, this imagined Windows Defender UI is quite clean and straightforward, and could actually make sense from the point of view of usability.

There is also a dark theme, a thing that Microsoft itself is expected to offer as well, and so are the essential options to start scans, be they quick, full, or custom.
"The lack of consistency affecting Windows 10 apps"

And while this design looks good and could make sense at some level, it might actually fuel the controversy around the lack of consistency that currently exists for Windows 10 apps.

Microsoft has been trying to overhaul all its Windows 10 apps and after making the highly-criticized switch to hamburger menus, the company now appears to abandon this element in favor of a simpler approach.

The latest version of the Photos app gave up on the hamburger menu in a pretty surprisingly move for Microsoft, especially given that the software giant praised it on several occasions.

In the end, this concept is living proof that Windows Defender can easily receive a visual overhaul, but it’s only up to Microsoft to decide what it should look like. There’s no doubt, however, that Redmond should also listen to its users and checking out this concept is a thing that Microsoft’s design team should certainly do.
